Portus (now Porto) and Cale (now Gaia – on the left bank of the Douro River) gave the name to the country – Portugal. Porto’s historical centre has been classified World Heritage, by UNESCO.
The heart of the city is located on the steep slopes of the city hills, descending till the Douro River, offering a beautiful scenery, unique not only per its architecture, but also per the colourful façades of the houses, dated back to the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Just wander on the narrow streets of the historical quarters and visit Clérigos Tower – projected by Nicolau Nasoni, the Palácio da Bolsa – the old and glamorous stock market’s head-quarters and the S.Francisco Church – Portuguese Baroque masterpiece. Cross the D. Luís I bridge –Gustave Eiffel’s school – and visit the famous Port Wine cellars, the biggest cellar of the world, in its all. Don’t fail the opportunity to taste the Douro Valley’s several types of wines.

The Minho region, where green prevails, is on the way to Santiago de Compostela; Guimarães, classified as World Heritage, was the birthplace of Portuguese nationality. Its Castle and the Dukes of Bragança Palace, in the heart of the city, are the highlights of the old burg. Braga, the celebrated Bracara Augusta and Viana do Castelo, sailors’ burg and birthplace of navigators, are mandatory in your visit to the North of Portugal. The Peneda-Gerês National Park, besides a biological importance, is the paradise of those who love nature and adventure. The Vinho Verde is a trademark of this region, neighbour to the Galicia.

The Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Region, as well as the Archaeological Park of Foz-Côa, are World Heritage. The Douro Valley is a renowned wine region, namely as far as the production of the famous Port Wine is concerned.
The Douro River is navigable in 250 km, from the Atlantic Ocean (Porto) to the Spanish border (Salamanca Region), with five dams. The Port Wine Farms, also producing high quality table wines, the beautiful manor houses and mediaeval castles, are unforgettable images of your trip in the north of Portugal, as much as the beautiful cities of millenary origin, like Vila Real and its splendorous Mateus Palace. Bragança and its majestic Castle and the roman origin Domus Municipalis, the International Arribas do Douro Natural Park and Chaves, the Aquae Flavia, famous spa, since the time of the Roman Empire are, as well as its people, an admirable parchment of the uses and traditions of its ancient past. João Rodrigues Cabrilho, discoverer of California, was born nearby, in the lands of Montalegre.
