In Portugal the Jewish Heritage is 1500 years old, being an important reference in cultural aspect. Lisbon, the river Tagus and the Atlantic ocean have testified the birth of important men in Portugal History like, Abraão Zacuto, Isaac Abravanel, Garcia da Orta, Pedro Nunes, Judá Abravanel (Leão Hebreu) from the gold times of the Conquests and Discoveries and the Anahory, Zagury,

Bensabat, Bensaude, Abecassis, Amazalack or Barros Basto of modern times.

Far beyond the importance of Porto and Lisbon synagogues, just from breathing the air inside the Tomar synagogue (15th century), built by Henry the Navigator, the visitor immediately understands the importance of the Jewish Heritage in Portugal. To discover Trancoso or Belmonte, birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Discoverer of Brazil is indeed a great surprise. Castelo de Vide is proud of its Jewish quarter and the 16th century synagogue. Garcia da Orta was born here and Spinosa’s parents (17th century great philosopher-1632-1677), were Portuguese and lived in Castelo de Vide.In the Visigothic Egitânia (Beira Interior – Castelo Branco), there is the most beautiful and imposing bridge of the Roman Empire, the Alcântara Bridge (World Heritage), built by the Emperor Trajano, 2000 years ago (Year 98 D. C.). Very near there is Cáceres, Human Heritage, where there was a very important Jewish nucleus. At Malpartida de Cáceres, in los Barruecos Museum, it is time to meet Wolf Vostell (1932-1998), a great Jewish intellectual and one of the major modern artists, the starter of Fluxos movement and discoverer of décollage technique.
